The employees with safety-sensitive functions in the transportation industry are responsible for a safe work environment for their co-workers and for the millions of people who travel in many ways throughout the nation. To keep the workplace safe, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has put in place rules to follow, like rules about drug use and alcohol misuse. A substance abuse professional, as defined by the Department of Transportation, is someone who evaluates employees who have failed a DOT drug or alcohol test and makes recommendations for treatment, education, follow-up testing, and aftercare.
SAP’s must have a license as a physician, social worker, psychologist, or otherwise licensed and certified therapist or counselor. It is their job to keep the public safe and to ensure that drivers who have been through the return-to-duty process are able to return to safety-sensitive positions.
