Employees responsible for safety-sensitive functions in the transportation industry must provide a safe work environment for co-workers and the millions of people who travel in many ways throughout the nation. By establishing work rules, including rules on drug use and alcohol misuse, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is able to create a safe work environment. A substance abuse professional, as defined by the US Department of Transportation, is a person who evaluates employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations and makes recommendations for the course of treatment or education, follow-up testing, and aftercare.
You must have a license as a physician, social worker, psychologist, or have another type of license or certification as a therapist or counselor to be a SAP. It is their responsibility to look out for the public’s safety and wellbeing and to make sure that drivers who have to go through the return-to-duty process are able to go back to safety-sensitive positions.
