In order to ensure a safe work environment, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has established work rules, including rules on drug use and alcohol misuse. As defined by the DOT, a substance abuse professional is a person who evaluates employees who have violated drug and alcohol testing regulations to make recommendations for treatment, education, follow-up testing, and aftercare.
SAP’s must be a licensed physician, social worker, psychologist, or otherwise licensed and certified therapist or counselor. They have the responsibility of protecting the public interest and making sure that drivers who go through the return-to-duty process are fit to go back to safety-sensitive positions.
