To keep the workplace safe, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has put in place rules to follow, like rules about drug use and alcohol misuse. A substance abuse professional, as defined by the Department of Transportation, is someone who evaluates employees who have failed a DOT drug or alcohol test and makes recommendations for treatment, education, follow-up testing, and aftercare.
Holding a license as a physician, social worker, psychologist, or having another type of license or certification as a therapist or counselor is a requirement for being a SAP. Their duty is to make sure that the public is safe and that drivers who have gone through the return-to-duty process are able to return to their safety-sensitive positions.
