The employees with safety-sensitive functions in the transportation industry are responsible for a safe work environment for their co-workers and for the millions of people who travel in many ways throughout the nation. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has established work rules in order to maintain a safe work environment, including rules concerning drug use and alcohol misuse. A substance abuse professional, or SAP, is defined by the US Department of Transportation as a person who evaluates employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations in order to make recommendations for the course of treatment or education, follow-up testing and aftercare.
You must have a license as a physician, social worker, psychologist, or have another type of license or certification as a therapist or counselor to be a SAP.
