In order to ensure a safe work environment, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has established work rules, including rules on drug use and alcohol misuse. As defined by the DOT, a substance abuse professional is a person who evaluates employees who have violated drug and alcohol testing regulations to make recommendations for treatment, education, follow-up testing, and aftercare.
In order to be a SAP, you must have a license as a physician, social worker, psychologist, or have another type of license or certification as a therapist or counselor. Their duty is to make sure that the public is safe and that drivers who have gone through the return-to-duty process are able to return to their safety-sensitive positions.
