Those employees with safety-sensitive functions in the transportation industry are in charge of maintaining a safe work environment for their colleagues and the millions of people who travel in different ways all over the nation. Establishing work rules, including rules on drug use and alcohol misuse, is how the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) ensures a safe work environment. A substance abuse professional, or SAP, evaluates employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations and makes recommendations for the course of treatment or education, follow-up testing, and aftercare, as defined by the US DOT.
You must have a license as a physician, social worker, psychologist, or have another type of license or certification as a therapist or counselor to be a SAP. It is their job to keep the public safe and to ensure that drivers who have been through the return-to-duty process are able to return to safety-sensitive positions.
